Undoubtedly the biggest story of this
race was the all-star line-up, which included Lance Armstrong and two-time
Ironman world champion Tim DeBoom.
Indeed, the entire bike and run course
in the Wasatch Mountains was filled with
spectators waiting to catch a glimpse of
the seven-time Tour de France winner in
his first foray back into multisport since
his teenage years.
But the day really belonged to France’s
Nico Lebrun and Canada’s Melanie Mc-
Quaid. Lebrun started his day a bit back
on the swim, but had climbed up the
ranks (and past Armstrong) by the end
of the grueling mountain bike course. He
polished off his win with an impressive
run to pass day-long leader Dan Hugo
of South Africa with only two miles to go.
McQuaid caught swim leader Christine
Jeffrey of Canada early on, and held her
lead throughout the day, crossing the tape
three minutes ahead of runner-up Leslie
Paterson of Scotland in 2: 43 flat.
